Complaints of alleged corruption and malpractices taking place in the 48 local government bodies in the Western Province have been made by members of the ruling party and the general public.
Local Government Services Commissioner has received over 100 complaints regarding such incidents.
Out of all the local government bodies, the highest numbers of complaints have been against Maharagama, Kalutara, Divulapitiya and Peliyagoda.
Local Government Services Commissioner H. Sumanapala has said that the allegations leveled against local government members are corruption, irregularities, financial frauds, violation of tender procedures, arbitrary recruitments, bribery and administrative bulldozing.
The Local Government Investigations Director is to now initiate investigations into these complaints.
However, investigations into some local government bodies have reportedly been completed and action had been taken against the Colombo Municipal Council and Panadura Municipality.
