The Fisheries Minister has said that 17 million rupees will be granted for inland fisheries industry in the North.
The Minister said that the fisheries industry collapsed due to the war in the past. The fishermen were not permitted to venture into the sea and the engine capacity of the boats was also limited. He said that during the next 5 years 8000 reservoirs will be utilized for the inland fisheries industry. He said that the fisheries Cooperation will purchase fresh water fish and sell at a reasonable price. He noted that the aim of the government is to provide a good income to the fishermen.
The Minister expressed this view when he participated in a function to handover fishing gear to Northern fishermen. Boats including mechanized boats, fishing nets and bicycles were amongst the equipment distributed amongst the fisher community in Mulaithivu, Vavuniya and Kilinochchi Districts. Deputy Minister Susantha Punchinilame also participated in the occasion.
