Programme to attract American tourists
Attention is being drawn to attracting more US tourists to Sri Lanka.
The promotion programme has been titled “Signature Tours”. This is a joint effort by the Sri Lankan Embassy in Washington and the Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Authority. Accordingly, the first tourist group has arrived in the island. They will visit various places of attraction until the 29th of this month. Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to the US Jaliya Wickramasuriya said another intention of the programme is to promote cultural ties between the two countries. He pointed out that Americans will be able to witness the peaceful environment prevailing in the country.
The US State Department lifted its travel advisory on Sri Lanka on the 26th of May this year, citing the peaceful atmosphere that has taken hold a year after Sri Lanka’s defeat of terrorism. The travel warning was issued for Sri Lanka on 19th November 2009.
