Rapid development is taking place in the North as well as the South with the liberation of the country from terrorism. The Matara – Colombo rail track project, which is another mega development programme occupies a significant place.

The total expenditure on this Matara – Colombo rail track development scheme is expected to be 158 million US dollars. 78 million dollars will be expended on the construction of the rail track and the import of 20 Power sets and three Locomotives. It is planned to build an operations yard for the maintenance of trains as well as for the training of 600 Railway employees. Construction will be carried under three stages. The first stage will be the construction from Matara to Galle while the second is from Galle to Kalutara. The final stage will be the construction of the rail track from Kalutara to Colombo.

The launching of construction took place under the patronage of Minister Kumara Welgama at the Weligama Railway station. The rail track will be of immense benefit to commuters. With the completion of work, trains can run at a very high speed from Colombo to Matara.
