Showers and thundershowers are forecast in many parts of the country. The people living in low lying areas in Ratnapura are warned to be careful of rising water levels.
The South West monsoon has activated. As such, the Met Department has forecast showers and thundershowers over most parts of the island. The water level of Kalu Ganga has risen. The Irrigation Department issued a warning to residents in low lying areas in Ratnapura to be on alert. Yakdehiwatta, Halkadaliya, Paathakada and Hangamuwa areas in the Nivithigala Divisional Secretariat Division are flooded.
In the meantime, heavy rain is being experienced in the Central hills from last night. As a result, three sluice gates of the Laksapana reservoir have been opened. Thick fog is reported along the road stretching from Kitulgala to Hatton. The Traffic Police have urged motorists to pay extra caution while traveling between these two points. A Tipper which was plying from Hatton to Colombo went down a precipice 50 feet deep in the wee hours of today. The driver and the assistant sustained injuries. The Police pointed out that the inclement weather condition will result in accidents due to skidding.
