President Rajapaksa has instructed officials to provide him with an immediate report after inquiring into the deterioration of the frescoes in Sigiriya.
On hearing about the pathetic situation, the President immediately summoned officials of the Cultural Affairs Ministry and called for a brisk assessment as to what measures have been taken in this respect. The President advised the officials to seek the assistance of veteran artistes in Sri Lanka in their venture to preserve the Sigiriya frescoes. He stressed the need that the work should be handled with dedication. It is the onus of the Cultural Affairs Ministry and the Department of Archaeology to safeguard the country’s national heritages. Sigiriya frescoes are part of Sri Lanka’s historical identity. Minister Pavithra Wanniarachchi and President’s Secretary Lalith Weeratunga were among those present at this meeting.
