The spreading of the AH1N1 virus in neighboring India had resulted in the Epidemiology Unit of the Health Ministry warning of a re-emergence of the virus in Sri Lanka.
Local authorities have however said that precautionary steps have been taken to prevent the virus from spreading in the country.
Senior Epidemiologist of the Health Ministry, Dr. Sudath Peiris has told the media that the previous 400,000 vaccine stocks for the AH1N1 virus which was requested from the World Health Organization (WHO) has been distributed to island wide hospitals.
According to Dr. Peiris, the government has requested for another one million vaccines from the WHO, as a precautionary measure.
The vaccines that have already been distributed among hospitals have been provided for free.
Dr. Peiris has said the steps were taken as precautionary measure because there was a high likelihood of the virus spreading to Sri Lanka from neighboring India.
