Reconciliation Commission begins second round of hearings

The eight member Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission appointed by the President has begun the second round of testimony hearings.

Rajiv Wijesinghe former head of the Peace Secretariat gave evidence when the Commission met at 9.30am. Recoding evidence of Manel Abeysekara started at 11.30am. The Commission which consists of seven members is headed by the former Attorney General C.R. de Silva.

The Commission has been bestowed with the responsibility of finding out the causes for the failure of the ceasefire Agreement between 1st Feb 2002 to 19th May 2009 and to review the incidents that took place during this period.

The final report will be handed over to the President within 6 months. The Commission will meet again on the 25th. Coordinator of the Commission G.A. Gunaratne said that Jayantha Dhanapala and Ashoka Gunawardena are due to give evidence on that day.
