Four suspects who were wanted for assaulting the Deputy Tax Commissioner have surrendered.
The Deputy Tax Commissioner H.M. Denzil of the Inland Revenue Department of Matara came under attack on the 11th of this month. Four suspects wanted for the incident surrendered to the Matara Court today. The Matara Chief Magistrate remanded them until the 6th of next month. The CID is conducting further investigations. President Rajapaksa intervened and directed the IGP to immediately arrest the suspects while also providing necessary security to officers of the Inland Revenue Department engaged in tax collection. Employees of the Department mounted protests, agitating the Government to intervene and for the Police to arrest the suspects involved in the attack. Police also promised a cash award of 500,000 rupees who gives information leading to the arrest of the suspects.
