A former firefighter charged with starting a series of blazes in 2007 and 2008 in Palmetto Bluff that caused more than $1.4 million in damage was sentenced to five years in prison Monday.
Bryan Yeager, 24, of Beaufort pleaded no contest -- which means he does not admit guilt but will not challenge arson and other charges one day before his trial was set to begin at the Beaufort County Courthouse.
The fires included one in 2008 that burned down a partially built house in Palmetto Bluff.
At the time, Yeager was a full-time firefighter with Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire District and a part-time security guard in Palmetto Bluff.
The house on Headwaters Road was about 80 percent completed when it was burned Jan. 12, 2008, according to a lawsuit filed by the house's owners against the security company that hired Yeager. Damage to the house was estimated at $1.4 million.
