Ex-firefighter to spend 5 years in prison for arson

Aug 24, 2010 6:35:00 AM - thestate.com
A former firefighter charged with starting a series of blazes in 2007 and 2008 in Palmetto Bluff that caused more than $1.4 million in damage was sentenced to five years in prison Monday.

Bryan Yeager, 24, of Beaufort pleaded no contest -- which means he does not admit guilt but will not challenge arson and other charges – one day before his trial was set to begin at the Beaufort County Courthouse.

The fires included one in 2008 that burned down a partially built house in Palmetto Bluff.

At the time, Yeager was a full-time firefighter with Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire District and a part-time security guard in Palmetto Bluff.

The house on Headwaters Road was about 80 percent completed when it was burned Jan. 12, 2008, according to a lawsuit filed by the house's owners against the security company that hired Yeager. Damage to the house was estimated at $1.4 million.
