Many facilities are being provided to increase tea production. Minister Mahinda Samarasinghe said their desire was to increase the area cultivated with tea.
The Minister said that they have to ensure that the name that Ceylon tea has earned over the 156 years since the Planters Association has been functioning would be protected, nurtured and made sustainable. In this respect, the Minister said quality has to be there. When considering the auctions today, he pointed out that the Colombo Auction was still attracting a premium over other auctions. This was mainly due to the quality that is synonymous with Ceylon tea.
The Minister was addressing the 156th annual General Meeting of the Planters’ Association. S.K.L. Obeysekera was inducted as the new President of the association.
