The main suspect involved in the assault of the Deputy Tax Commissioner of the Matara Branch of the Inland Revenue Department has been arrested.
The CID nabbed the suspect last evening. He is a millionaire gem businessman from the Kamburupitiya area of the Matara district. The Matara Chief Magistrate Udesh Ranatunga ordered to keep him under Police custody till the 10th of next month. Four other suspects surrendered through their Counsel. They were remanded till the 6th of next month. Deputy Tax Commissioner H.M. Denzil was severely assaulted last Wednesday and was admitted to the Matara hospital. The President last week ordered the IGP to immediately arrest the suspect and accord security to tax officers engaged in the field.
