The Government has underlined that not a single factory will close down as result of the country losing the GSP facility. Expressing views at a media briefing today, Deputy Minister Lakshman Yapa Abeywardena said no employee would also face retrenchment.
The Deputy Minister emphasized that 70 percent of local apparel production was purchased by the United States. The GSP Plus is not an issue to that country. All garment factories had improved their quality of the products without taking any notice of the issue. As such, it will not have an impact on them. He revealed that there are more than 7400 vacancies in the apparel sector within the free-trade zone, if anyone has lost jobs. The Minister added that there is no issue for the country due to the loss of the GSP facility.
