Two phases of the Southern Highway from Kottawa to Kurundugaha Hathapma will be vested with the public next year, said Highways Deputy Minister Nirmala Kotalawala.
The Deputy Minister said there are still some practical problems in the completion of the project but hopefully the first phase could be vested with the public in May, 2011 as planned earlier.
He said that 90 percent of the highway between Kurundugaha Hethapma to Godagama is completed. Most of the work of the Kottawa to Godagama Highway is also complete.
Deputy Minister Kotalawala held a meeting with the Ministry officials Wednesday.
The meeting was with the companies, consultant companies and Ministry officials that have under taken this project under the directives of President Mahinda Rajapaksa.
Stating that the official level is optimistic of the completion of the project by next May, the Deputy Minister said there were few practical problems raised by contractors like acquisition of some lands and construction of the highway along rocky areas that stretched for a few miles.
