Today (27) the Sri Lankan cabinet gave approval for the 2018 Commonwealth Games to be held in the Hambantota district of Sri Lanka. The 2010 games will be held in India and the 2014 games will be held in England.
This is part of the government development plan for Hambantota, President Mahinda Rajapaksa’s home district. With the recent opening of a port, upcoming construction of an international airport, convention center and more, the government envisions transforming the rural and economically undeveloped southern province to one of five economic centers in the country.
The Commonwealth Games are an international sporting event where 54 nations compete in 31 Olympic type sports like Athletics, Basketball, Gymnastics, Rowing and more. The nations that participate are from former British territories.
