Clemson University has announced a campaign to raise $600 million for the South Carolina school.
Multiple media outlets reported that Clemson President James Barker kicked off the public part of fundraising campaign Thursday in front of more than 1,000 students, faculty and staff members.
The school says the money would be used for scholarships, faculty endowments and professorships, building maintenance, economic development and research.
Barker says the school started planning the campaign four years ago.
The school says private gifts, pledges, bequests, real estate and commitments totaling $433 million have been raised since May 2007. Donations given to the university's athletic or academic divisions since July 1, 2006, will be counted toward the goal.
