18 nails removed from tortured woman

The operation to remove 18 nails and pins inserted into a 50-year-old Sri Lankan housemaid from Matara who had been tortured while serving in Saudi Arabia has been successfully completed.

Kamburupitiya Government Hospital sources reported that 18 nails and pins were extracted from the body which contained a total of 23 nails and pins. Out of the extracted 13 are reported to be 2 inch nails and the rest pins.

The surgeons who conducted the operation which last two and a half hours today have remained six nails as they pose no threat to the woman. They said that the removal of the remaining nails would danger the life of the woman in concern and produce further complications. The woman L.T.Ariyawathi was recovering after the operation.

In the meantime, Minister Prof. G.L. Peiris has decided to make inquiries from the Saudi Ambassador in Colombo on the incident. He will make inquiries as to how a Sri Lankan worker had ben tortured flouting international regulations. The Foreign Ministry in Colombo has also decided to direct the medical report of the woman to the Saudi Government. The Government’s intention is to see that maximum punishment is meted out to the Saudi employer.

The Foreign Employment Bureau said if the need does arise, the housemaid will also be taken to Saudi Arabia to testify against the employer who brutally inserted the nails into her body. He said the Bureau will make all arrangements to take her to Saudi Arabia to testify.
