The 19th Congress of the Communist Party of Sri Lanka has commenced in Colombo.
The opening took place at the Shalika Hall in Colombo with the participation of representatives of many political parties and scholars. The Communist Party was launched as a gathering of local left moderates during the year 1943. It was headed by Dr. S.A. Wickramasinghe. The Communist Party played a pioneering role in the establishment of several socialist regimes with leftist political groups. It was always engaged in a struggle for a political system which would uplift the destitute as well as meeting the desires of the people. The 19th Congress will deal at length the present political climate in Sri Lanka as well as its future. It is due to draw to a conclusion tomorrow.
