The days of having a single professional qualification to get one’s foot in the corporate door are coming to an end; in today’s competitive job market, having more qualifications means having a sharper edge that will take you further up the ladder faster.
The Association for Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA) offers students a flexible professional qualification and a degree in accounting which will open up a world of unlimited possibilities.

Speaking to The Sunday Leader, Business Relationship Manager, ACCA – Sri Lanka, Nilusha Ranasinghe explained that students stand to gain two qualifications without the hassle of doubling their workload. The ACCA qualification is neither solely a business management qualification nor sector driven but instead a purely financial qualification that is helpful to professionals across all industries be it public, private or the audit sector.
Nilusha Ranasinghe explained, “You could be an accountant, banker, finance director or CEO; this qualification helps make you a fully fledged accountant and has the backing of Oxford Brooks University which has been voted one of the best new universities in the UK.”
Ranasinghe added that the main feature of the qualification however is that it complements a student’s lifestyle, is cost effective, and can be done entirely in Sri Lanka or completed in another country as ACCA is globally recognised and supported by a global network.
The ACCA qualification consists of just 14 papers and is ideal for working professionals as it requires three years working experience to complete.
Ranasinghe said, “We are in the process of expanding to Jaffna and the South and we have a panel of lecturers which is both experienced and committed to helping students reach their full potential. Our pass rates have also been impressive and are above the global average for most of the papers and our student’s have been world prize winners. What’s more is that we try our best to help students find placements both locally and abroad and so far many of our graduates have gone on to have illustrious careers.”
The ACCA qualification enables students to achieve better employment prospects as a result of having shown an ability in all areas of business and will help assure an employer that they have the skills necessary to progress to more senior management positions.
In addition, it provides a student a unique position in the job market making them more competitive not only within their own countries but also enables one to seek job opportunities to work abroad.
The Certified Accounting Technician (CAT) qualification will provide a student with a solid foundation in finance and accounting with all the necessary technical skills and knowledge required to perform an accounting-support role. This qualification she added will give any student who wishes to start a career in finance early, a good grounding and assist the student to gain recognition to aspire for a more senior position in accountancy.
She went on to explain that the BSc (Hons) in Applied Accounting, is available exclusively to ACCA students who wish to obtain a degree while studying towards the ACCA qualification. There are numerous benefits to completing this degree, and it enhances career prospects.
Ranasinghe added, “Time is of the essence. Students completing A/Ls now have the opportunity to enroll in a dynamic and internationally recognised degree which they can study coupled with university. Because at ACCA we believe that students should be armed and strengthened with as many qualifications as they can.”
