The ban imposed with regard to sending housemaids to Jordan is still effective. This has been revealed by the Foreign Employment Bureau.
Its Chairman Kingsley Ranawaka said there is no truth in the rumours that the ban has been relaxed. A ban was imposed on the dispatch of Sri Lankan women as housemaids for low salaries due to lack of job security.
The Chairman has requested Job Agencies to strictly abide by the conditions in the job contract and to increase the housemaids’ salary to 200 Dinars. The Sri Lankan Ambassador in Jordan has held discussions with the representatives of the Jordanian Government.
Although there has been an agreement on increasing the salaries, agreement was not reached regarding job security. The Foreign Employment Bureau has therefore emphasized that the ban is still in force.
