All those who pass the G.C.E. (A) Level examination in the science stream can join the nursing service.

The decision has been taken as a solution to overcome the shortage of nurses in Hospitals. The Health Ministry has so far taken measures to recruit 4,540 persons to undergo training as nurses. The target of the Ministry is to recruit 15,000 nurses as an urgent measure.

The Minister stressed at a function held at the Nurses Training School in Kandy that he has issued instructions to the health authorities to allow those who pass the GC.E. (A) Level examination in the science stream to join the nursing service. The Ministry has currently decided to recruit 5000 nurses annually. A notable feature is that normally only around 3500 applications had been received.
