South Carolinians are preparing to bid "bon voyage" to the only American in this year's solo race around the world race that starts from France.
The send-off for Brad Van Liew is scheduled for Thursday at a marina on Charleston Harbor. There will be entertainment and folks will be able to meet the crew, talk to the skipper and tour the 60-foot racing yacht set to compete in the Velux 5 Oceans race.
Van Liew is racing solo around the world for the third time. He won the Around Alone, the predecessor of the Velux, in 2003.
He' plans to leave for France this weekend.
The Velux starts Oct. 17 from La Rochelle, France and has a stopover in Charleston next spring before ending in France.
