Sri Lanka has Asia’s strongest Government – President

Sri Lanka now has the Asia’s strongest Government. Even Sri Lanka’s name has been taken to the world. Unite to build the country. These observations were made by President Rajapaksa.

The President referred to claims made at that time that it was not possible to set up a government with a 2/3rds majority under this Constitution. Today this party has obtained two third majority and formed the strongest government in Asia. Constitutional experts thought it was not even possible to have a clear majority under the present Constitution. But by strengthening the party, they had obtained a two thirds majority. The constitution should not remain unchanged until the sun and moon exist. The time has come for them to change these things. He opined that if they cannot meet the aspirations of the people through this constitution, it is their responsibility to obtain the required strength to form a stable government.

Sri Lanka Freedom Party has given leadership to the people of this country always. There were people among them who wanted the Party to distance from sentiments such as this is their country, their nation and their religion. But the Mahinda Chintana succeeded in changing all these things. The Sri Lanka Freedom Party succeeded in giving the nation a Sri Lankan identity. The President emphasized that they have joined with the other progressive forces and instilled a sense of anti-imperialism, courage, nationalism and values in the party while getting all races to align with it.

The President was addressing the 59th National Convention of the Sri Lanka Freedom Party. It was held under the President’s patronage at Temple Trees. Senior Leaders, Parliamentarians, Provincial and Local Government representatives represented the large gathering present. Further in his address, the President said that an era has dawned to effect changes to the Constitution based on the needs of country, while safeguarding the sovereignty of the people.

Three Resolutions submitted taking into consideration the national need were adopted at the Convention. It was Prime Minister D.M.Jayaratne who presented the amendment proposal which would eliminate the number of terms of the Presidency. The Prime Minister said he was present to this Grand Convention that the present Constitution should be amdned. He called upon the gathering to raise their hands and unanimously approve the resolution.

Minister Ratnasiri Wickremanayake presented the Resolution proposing that everyone should unite to win the future through unity. The Resolution on Economic unity and development was moved by Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva. A notable feature was the introduction of of the SLFP new electronic membership Card at the Convention. T.D. Pasqual who had rendered a noble service during the past 59 years was honoured. The award was presented by the President. Members of the Maha Sangha and leaders of many political parties supporting the Sri Lanka Freedom Party were present.
