The Chief of Indian Army General V. K. Singh is due in the island today on a five-day official visit.
During his visit, General Singh is scheduled to meet Sri Lanka’s Defence Secretary Gotabhaya Rajapaksa, his Sri Lankan counterpart Lieutenant General Jagath Jayasuriya and other senior defence officials. The main purpose of his visit is to broach defence cooperation aiming to strengthen bilateral military ties between the two neighbours.
The General, who has led the war against LTTE in “Operation Pawan” to capture Jaffna from LTTE in late 1987 as part of the Indian Peace Keeping Force, is scheduled to visit Vavuniya. His visit comes in the wake of India’s Foreign Secretary Nirupama Rao’s three-day visit to the island on Monday.
