18th Amendment will strengthen the power of the people

Sep 5, 2010 5:52:55 AM - itnnews.lk

Minister Ratnasiri Wuickremanayake has pointed out that the intention of the proposed Constitutional Amendment is to further strengthen the power of the people.

The Minister said the accelerated development desired by the people cannot be achieved without bringing them together. If so the Constitution had to be amended. Some say that the basic feature of this effort was to extend the term of office of the President. It is totally incorrect. If the people wish, the person who had been in office for two terms can be elected for another term of office. It is the people who are vested with the power to do so. The Minister queried whether anyone can say it is not reasonable.

The Minister was addressing a meeting organised at the Sumanajothi Vidyalaya in Ingiriya. The Minister further said that the desire of the Mahinda Chinthana was to step up development which would ensure the country’s self-sufficiency. Parliamentarian Vidura Wickremanayake was present.
