A longtime state transportation commissioner and father of South Carolina's speaker of the House, Bob Harrell has died. He was 75.
The J. Henry Stuhr Funeral Home in Charleston confirmed that Harrell died Friday morning. The Post and Courier of Charleston said he died after a long illness.
Rep. Bobby Harrell told the newspaper that his father was a role model for family life, public service and business.
The elder Harrell owned an insurance agency in Charleston and a pecan farm in nearby Meggett. He served a four-year term as transportation commissioner beginning in 1990, in 2000 and again in 2004. His last term ended in 2007 when the state Supreme Court ruled that commissioners could not be appointed to successive terms.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday at Northbridge Baptist Church.
