Mahanayake refers to complications in the Constitution

Sep 6, 2010 4:35:15 AM - itnnews.lk

The complications created by former President J.R. Jayawardena have still not been overcome. The Asgiriya Mahanayake the Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakhita thera said that the present generation has to undergo the consequences.

He made this references when a group of Parliamentarians including the UNP Deputy Leader Karu Jayasuriya paid a courtesy call on him. The group called on the Mahanayake to intimate to them their opposition to the proposed Constitutional Amendments. The Mahanayake informed them that there should be a stable administrator in the country who should have powers to guide the others. There should be a skilled leader and the term of such a leader should not be limited for six or 10 years. The Mahanayake thera pointed out that the others should support him.

While expressing his support to the programme of the Government the Mahanayake thera said that the country cannot be developed sans their support. He told the UNP Parliamentarians that the President’s desire was to improve the lives of the masses. There has always been a party that opposes. The country cannot be developed if they opposed every programme. The Mahanayake thera opined that therefore they should extend support to the programmes of the Government.
