The good news is that Harbour Town’s Liberty Oak will survive its worst insect infestation in at least 30 years, experts say.
The not-so-good news is that its survival will require a lot of work — and money.
By year’s end, about $4,000 to $5,000 will have been spent to take care of the tree, according to Sea Pines director of sports Cary Corbitt.
Gary Mullane, the tree consultant for the Sea Pines resort, said the revered tree is in good shape, given its age of 225 to 250 years. The Liberty Oak is a focal point of the Harbour Town Yacht Basin and is surrounded by walkways and benches.
