UNP MP Dayasiri Jayasekara is to stage a fast against the proposed 18th amendment, Protest Coordinator, Shiral Lakthilaka confirmed.
Twenty five MPs including Dayasiri Jayasekara, Ravi Karunanayake, Sajith Premedasa and Mangala Samaraweera are currently holding a satyagraha (non-violent resistance) on the parliament premises, after which, at around 6.30 pm today, Jayasekara is to commence his fast.
Despite previously circulated reports of Dayasiri planning to launch a fast unto death, Lakthileka stated that the protest would only be in the form of a fast that would end tomorrow evening.
“The other MPs will continue to be there and support him,” Lakthilaka said adding that the satyagraha would continue whilst Jayasekara fasted.
Lakthilaka also said that they anticipated attempts to remove the protest from parliamentary premises and depending on the pressure, the protest would be relocated someplace else close to parliament.
“This is a never-ending campaign. We will continue forever until we are able to defeat this political force,” he said.
