South Carolina's longest-serving congressman and a freshman state senator will have their first debate in a lakeside community.
Democratic U.S. Rep. John Spratt will debate his challenger, state Sen. Mick Mulvaney, at River Hills Country Club on Tuesday in the Lake Wylie community just south of Charlotte.
Spratt's campaign persuaded the debate sponsor to bar any video or tape recording of the debate. The campaign says it doesn't want clips to be taken out of context, such as happened to a U.S. Agriculture Department employee earlier this year.
Mulvaney's campaign says Spratt is refusing to be transparent.
The debate is in increasingly conservative York County, which is Spratt's home and accounts for 30 percent of 5th District voters. Mulvaney lives in the Indian Land community of Lancaster County.
