Amendment will consolidate peoples’ franchise

Deputy Minsiter Lakshman Yapa Abeywardane has said that the 18th Constitutional Amendment will consolidate the sovereignty of the people. The Minster made this reference at a media briefing in Colombo.

The Minister emphasized that this was not an anti-people’s amendment. It is an effort by the Government to enhance the peoples’ franchise. It is based on the Mahinda Chinthana Extended Version. Accordingly, it is mandatory that the President attend Parliament once in three months if not, according to the Constitution legal action can be taken. President will be responsible to Parliament. The President should attend Parliamentary Session and respond to queries and work according to Parliamentary traditions. The Minister reminded that this is for democratic than the constitution adopted in 1978. what the Government needed was not to acquire his political stability by force. The Minster added that this political stability will be acquired through the people’s mandate.
