Cabinet nod has been received to amend the Local Government Electoral System. Minister Keheliya Rambukwella said that this agreement was reached by the Cabinet.
Briefing journalists at the Cabinet news briefing, the Minister said a wide political agreement was reached that the Local Government Elections should be held based on the Ward System in view of the shortcomings in the existing Electoral System. The Government observed that there is a social consensus that the present system should be changed. Accordingly, Cabinet approval was granted to instruct the Legal Draftsman to draft legislation to amend the Local Government Elections Ordinance and the Municipal Council Ordinance, Urban Council Ordinance and the Pradeshiya Sabha Act, to be presented to Parliament. The Minister pointed out that the Local Authority areas will be delimited into Wards based on the First Past the Post System and a number of members not exceeding 1/3 of the number of Wards of the Local Area will be appointed under PR system.
