Today marks the end of the holy month of Ramadan – the month Muslims set aside to fast from dawn to sunset, and ask forgiveness for past sins, pray for guidance and help in refraining from everyday evils, purify themselves through self-restraint and good deeds, for the sake of God.
Muslims believe that through fasting they become closer to God, learn patience, learn humility and spirituality. Ramadan - being the month in which the first verses of the Qur’an (Holy Book) were revealed to the Prophet Muhammed - is also believed to be an auspicious month for revelations from God to mankind.
Eid prayers, marking the end of Ramadan, were held at many key locations island wide. Pictured here are children and families partaking in Eid prayers at the Sirisena Grounds at Maligawatte.
