In a first for the Columbia area, a Mount Pleasant firm is putting up a cell phone tower disguised as a short-leaf pine tree.
Optima Towers recently started work on the 130-foot structure the owners say will fit in among the mature tree cover at Trenholm Road and Beltline Boulevard, improving cell service for the well-established neighborhoods around it.
“It’s a very cutting-edge design, a relatively new design for this, and looks like a real tree as close as it can,” said lawyer Jonathan Yates, who handles public relations for Optima Towers. “It really looks good.”
The base will be built of steel, with the bark made of resin and the green needles out of a textile material treated to withstand sunlight without fading, he said.
