UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has said the party would have to take drastic action against members who work against the party, adding that the party would not fall even though some of its members crossed over to the government earlier this week.
Wickremesinghe addressing a gathering in Bandarawela on Thursday (9) has reportedly said new groups interested in the party would be given membership instead of those who work against the party.
The UNP is to hold a series of public rallies to attract new members to the party.
According to Wickremesinghe, these meetings are aimed at taking the party’s message to the village level.
Wickremesinghe has also assured that the party would not allow President Mahinda Rajapaksa to continue to a third term and would work towards getting a UNPer elected as the president.
“We managed to uncover a conspiracy to destroy the party and was able to avoid it,” he has said.
Wickremesinghe has observed the party would not fall when its parliamentarians crossed over as the strength was with the other members of the party.
He has assured that a new constitution would be introduced to the party as soon as possible.
