The President is to grant a general pardon to all prisoners who are over 70 years of age.
The Prisons Department said the decision to release the prisoners on license was reached to mark the Prisoners Welfare Day which will be observed tomorrow. Under this programme, inmates over 70 years of age who had served more than 20 years will be released. The amnesty will not cover those who have been sentenced to death. The prisoners have been granted the opportunity of meeting their relatives and friends in view of the welfare day tomorrow. The inmates who have been granted capital punishment and life imprisonment will also be able to meet with their loved ones and enjoy themselves.
