I am glad that quite rightly a lot of prominence has been given recently in the press including The Sunday Leader on the above subject and I too wish to make my own observations in this regard.
The holy Kandy Randoli Maha Perahera of the Esala Pageant took place on the night of August 24 and the following day (25) in the premises adjoining the Sri Bathrakali Amman Kovil at Munneswaram in Chilaw misguided devotees, sadly, with the ‘blessings’ of the high priest of that temple cruelly/brutally and mercilessly slaughtered (‘sacrificed’) more than 300 goats and 700 or more fowls under the pretext of ‘ritual sacrifice’ of animals and birds for Kali Amman — a horrifying/sadistic event indeed!
Quite rightly the Jathika Sammelanaya (a group of Buddhist monks) and ‘right thinking’ lay people had planned a peaceful ‘protest’ march/procession to the Kali Amman Kovil on the date scheduled for the ‘animal and bird sacrifice’ but this was prevented/obstructed by the law enforcing authority on a directive given to them; they say to prevent/avoid clashes.
I make this fervent appeal to the President of Sri Lanka — the final authority — to take immediate action to ban animal and bird sacrifice in all places of Hindu worship in keeping with the principle of ‘Ahimsa’ (compassion) and ‘Mettha’ (loving kindness) as preached by the most compassionate, noble Buddha and ‘reverence’ for life, as emphasised in correctly understood Hinduism.
