The number of tourists arriving in Sri Lanka is rising. Tourist arrivals during the first eight months of this year increased by 46.7 percent in comparison to the same period last year
The number increased to 398,000 from nearly 230,000 a year ago. Arrivals for August increased by 35.7 percent. The increase is mainly attributed to the promotion programmes launched in the island with the dawn of peace. Data released by the Tourism Development Authority said that during the first eight months of this year, there was an increase of tourist arrivals from North America, Latin America as well as from European countries. South African arrivals also picked up by 31.6 percent, in addition a growth from the Middle East.
The Tourism Development Authority said that in parallel to the increase in arrivals, plans are afoot to increase the number of hotel rooms from 14,000 to 34,000.
