Programme to mark Prisoners’ Day

Several programmes are underway in view of Prisoners’ Day. A special ceremony will be held at the SLFI in Colombo, under the patronage of Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne. The official ceremony will be held on Tuesday. Minister Dew Gunasekara said this ceremony is being organized under the patronage of President Rajapaksa.

A Prisoners’ Week was declared from the 6th of this month during which many programmes were launched in almost all prisons countrywide numbering about 30. The Prisoners’ Week draws to an end today, coinciding with Prisoners’ Day. A special ceremony has been organized to mark the event at the SLFI, where the Prime Minister will be the Chief Guest. The Minister said that another programme is being planned on Tuesday the 14th under the President’s patronage. For the first time prisoners and official will participate in this vent. The Minister revealed that it is planned to grant an amnesty for the prisoners on this day.
