Measures are being taken to open the rice processing centres at Hingurakkgoda and Inginiyagala that have been abandoned for a number of years.
The President recently instructed the authorities not to permit the private sector to monopolise the rice processing centres when the Government has the necessary resources. Accordingly, Minister Johnston Fernando had taken measures to reopen the abandoned rice processing centres at Inginiyagala and Hingurakkgoda. The Hingurakkgoda centre has the capacity to process 40 thousand kilogrammes of rice a day. The Minister and a group of officials made an inspection tour at the centre to look into the initial work to be completed in this connection. The processing centre will be reopened this year using the modern technology to increase productivity.
Meanwhile, Minister Johnston Fernando and the group also inspected the rice processing centre at Inginiyagala. It has the capacity to process 35 thousand kilograms of rice per day. The Minister said that the Ampara Rice processing centre will also be reopened within the next three months, after solving the existing problems.
