UNP crisis worsens

Sep 12, 2010 12:34:47 PM - itnnews.lk

The UNP rebel group is to take a hard line against the leadership if a meeting of the group will not be called to find a solution.

Kurunegala District Parliamentarian Dayasiri Jayasekera has already announced their intention to sit in the Parliament as an independent group. He said that the practice of biding time without finding a solution is outdated. He noted that the responsibility for the disintegration of the party should be taken over by the leadership. He has warned of the possibility of more Parliamentarians leaving the party if the leadership is not handed over to a suitable group to build the party. Sources say that 28 members have already decided to stay independently at the next Parliamentary session. Dayasiri Jayasekara has said that that action has not been taken by the party authorities although their decision has been informed to the party leadership. At present the UNP has only 43 members in the House. If 28 members will leave the party, Ranil Wickramasinghe will be left with a group of only 15. Political sources say that several senior Parliamentarians are also ready to support the government as a separate group.
