A large number of prisoners have been released on the orders of the President to mark the “Prisoners Welfare Day”.
The majority of the inmates who are released are over 70 years of age. Hundred and fourteen inmates of the Welikada prison who were imprisoned due to minor offences received Presidential pardon. Four of them were over 70 years. A number of programmes were organized to observe the Prisoners Welfare Day. Hundred and three inmates were released from the Bogambara Prison. The group consisted of those who were in Prison for committing minor offences and those who could not pay the fines. Sixty three prisoners were released from the Galle Prison. Fifty four male prisoners and four female prisoners were amongst them. The President had instructed the officials to release those who are over 70 years, excluding those who were indicted for serious offences.
