The President has said that all work is being carried out for the happiness of the people.
He recalled that the Government has not deferred fulfilling its duties. He stressed that the development of a country has no meaning if the people are unhappy. The President said that they had to serve the people. It is important to fulfil the duties towards them according to their requirements. He said that the Government has a responsibility to carry out a development programme. The Government should plan not for today but for the next 20 years. The network of schools and the Universities are being strengthened to create useful citizens. In addition, a programme has been launched to strengthen the economy and to draw income into the country. He said that creating a virtuous generation is not the sole responsibility of the Government.
The President expressed these views at the inauguration of the first phase of the building complex of the Sitawaka Pradeshiya Sabha. The building was constructed at an expenditure of 28 million rupees. The first phase consists of a new meeting hall, main office, the Hanwella sub-office and a committee hall. A library, an auditorium and a reading room will be constructed under the second phase. The constructions depict the historic eminence of the Sitawaka Kingdom. Members of the Maha Sangha, Ministers Dinesh Gunawardena, Susil Premajayanth, Bandula Gunawardena, Gamini Lokuge and the Chairman of the Sitawaka Pradeshiya Sabha Ravindra Jayasinghe were amongst the dignitaries who participated.
