A University of South Carolina philosophy professor is gathering professors from across the country for a series of lectures on the issue of civility in public discourse.
USC officials say Christopher Tollefsen opens the series Monday evening in Columbia with an address by Vincent Colapietro on the subject of democracy as a moral ideal. Colapietro is a professor of philosophy from Penn State University.
Other speakers will address topics such as the history of debate in ancient Athens, the discussion of science, religion, race or war in the public domain and the role journalists play.
Speakers come from USC as well as Princeton, Harvard, the University of Illinois and the University of San Diego.
The series is open to the public.
