Objections raised against the Presidential election petition

Sep 13, 2010 12:08:52 PM - itnnews.lk

Attorneys have raised initial objections that the petition filed against the Presidential Election result should be rejected without being taken into consideration.

The petition was taken up for hearing by a five-member panel of Judges including Chief Justice Ashoka De Silva. 26 persons including candidates who contested the Presidential poll have been cited as respondents. President’s Counsel D.S. Wijesinghe appearing on behalf of the President, raising objections emphasized that the petition has not been presented fulfilling recognized legal requirements.

Senior Attorney Kushan de Alwis said that President’s Counsel D.S. Wijesinghe made submissions on behalf of the President. Objections have been raised that this petition cannot be taken up for hearing as there is no legal basis for it. He said they will continue to make submissions tomorrow too.

Many politicos including Parliamentarians had arrived at the Supreme Court premises to witness the hearing. Submissions on objections will resume tomorrow morning.
