The Inter University Students Federation (IUSF) has requested the Presidential Commission probing into the death of Ruhuna University student Susantha Bandara to inquire as to why the IGP and the Police had failed to investigate into the attack on the university students on July 18 this year.
The attack on the Ruhuna University students on July 18 by the Matara Police allegedly resulted in Bandara’s death last month due to injuries sustained in the attack.
IUSF Head Udul Premaratne told The Sunday Leader that the IUSF members had yesterday requested the Commission to inquire into the attack on the Ruhuna University students in July.
He said a complaint on the attack was even handed over to the IGP on July 20 and the news was given media publicity on July 21.
“Why did the police fail to inquire into the attack on the Ruhuna University students by the police?” he queried, adding that the students who were assaulted included Bandara had given statements of the attack at the time.
Premaratne also called on the authorities to conduct an impartial inquiry as the necessary evidence has been received.
“The police accused another Ruhuna University student called Basnayake for assaulting Bandara, he has given a statement. The IUSF and the 52 students from the Ruhuna University have also given statements. Bandara’s parents have made statements. The authorities now have to conduct an impartial inquiry,” Premaratne said.
