A judge Monday denied bail for an Orangeburg mother accused of killing her two toddlers.
Circuit Judge Edgar Dickson ruled after Shaquan Duley’s lawyer outlined the strategy he may use at her trial, saying Duley was depressed, suicidal and grieving just before dawn on Aug. 16, when, warrants allege, she strangled her two sons in a local motel room, strapped their lifeless bodies into car seats and drove a car into the North Edisto River.
At Monday’s hour-long hearing, 1st Circuit Solicitor David Pascoe told Dickson he might seek the death penalty against Duley — who attended the bail hearing but did not speak — but has not made a decision.
Calling the killings of Devean Duley, 2, and his brother Ja’van, 18 months, a “horrific” crime, Pascoe ridiculed defense arguments that Duley’s severe depression was the reason for the killings.
