End crime directed from prison - President

President Mahinda Rajapaksa yesterday said there should be a mechanism to put a halt to prisoners directing criminal activities from behind prisons wall.
He said the Government is fully aware of the situation where prison inmates are directly involved in directing criminal activities while in confinement.
President Rajapaksa was speaking at a ceremony to mark the Prisoners’ Welfare Day at Temple Trees yesterday. He is the first Head of State to meet Prisons Department officials and convicts in the department’s history. The President presented certificates to prison inmates who have displayed their talents in various fields. The Moneragala remand prison was adjudged the best prison of the country while the award for the best detention centre went to the Pallekele Detention centre.
