Columbia OKs new steps for liquor licensees

New liquor stores in Columbia would have to seek a special exception from the city's Board of Zoning Appeals under new rules the City Council approved this morning.
The new rules mean prospective liquor store owners would have to appear before the zoning board in a public hearing. It would give neighborhoods more time to organize opposition, if they chose to oppose it.
The city's Planning Commission recommended 4-3 that the council deny the zoning change because some commission members said it would not make a difference because the zoning board rarely denies a special exception request.
