The TNA today (16) turned down the nomination of TNA MP M.A. Sumanthiran as Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe’s nominee to the Parliament Council, which is to be established under the 18th Amendment.
TNA MP Suresh Premachandran told The Sunday Leader that while Sumanthiran has already rejected the proposal, the TNA would not accept any nominations to the Parliament Council, as the party was opposed to the 18th Amendment.
“The TNA is opposed to the 18th Amendment and does not want to play any part in its implementation. Sumanthiran had rejected the offer when Ranil Wickremesinghe had spoken to him earlier. The TNA does not want to have any role in the Parliament Council, which is a powerless body,” he said.
Opposition Leader Wickremesinghe earlier in the day announced that he has nominated the name of TNA MP Sumanthiran as his nominee to the Parliament Council.
However, Wickremesinghe had said he would not attend the Parliament Council.
